Will I Regret Not Hiring a Birth Photographer? Honest Thoughts From Someone Who Has Witnessed Hundreds of Births

If you’ve found yourself wondering…

“Will I regret not hiring a birth photographer?”

I want you to know something first.

That is an incredibly normal question.

Birth photography is unlike family photography, newborn photography, or maternity photography.

You can’t schedule a do-over.

You can’t recreate it six months later.

Your baby’s birthday happens exactly once.

After photographing births for years, I’ve had the privilege of watching families experience one of the biggest days of their lives.

And one thing I’ve noticed over and over again is this:

Parents almost never tell me,

“I’m so glad I have a picture of the exact moment my baby was born.”

Instead…

They tell me they’re grateful for the moments they didn’t even know happened.

As a birth photographer serving families throughout Fort Worth, Dallas, and North Texas, that’s the part of birth photography that means the most to me.

No One Remembers Every Detail of Their Birth

Partner supporting a laboring mother during childbirth in Fort Worth.

Before I became a birth photographer, I assumed moms remembered everything about the day their babies were born.

Then I started talking with families after I delivered their galleries.

Almost every single one said some version of the same thing.

“I forgot that happened.”

Not because it wasn’t important.

But because birth asks so much of you.

You’re focused on each contraction.

You’re listening to your care team.

You’re completely consumed by bringing your baby into the world.

Meanwhile…

Life keeps happening around you.

Your partner is watching you with complete admiration.

Grandparents are quietly wiping away tears.

Your birth team is celebrating right alongside you.

Those moments become part of your story, even if you never saw them.

The Photos Parents Love Most Usually Aren’t the Ones They Expected

If I asked ten parents to guess which photograph would become their favorite…

Most would probably say:

“The moment the baby was born.”

Sometimes that’s true.

But honestly?

After photographing hundreds of births, that’s rarely the photograph families mention first.

Instead, they talk about…

The way Dad looked at Mom.

The first time Grandma held the baby.

Their toddler’s huge smile while meeting their new sibling.

The tiny fingers wrapped around Mom’s thumb.

Those are the photographs that quietly grow in value every year.

Not because they’re dramatic.

Because they’re real.

One Day, These Photographs Won’t Be for You

This is something I think about often.

One day…

Your baby won’t be a baby anymore.

They’ll be five.

Then ten.

Then twenty-five.

And one day they’ll ask about the day they were born.

What was Mom like?

Did Dad cry?

Who held me first?

Was everyone excited?

Your birth photographs become part of your family’s history.

They’re not just preserving memories for you.

They’re preserving the beginning of your child’s story.

The Births I Remember Most Aren’t Always the Ones You’d Expect

After years of attending births, I’ve realized something that surprised me.

The births I remember most aren’t always the fastest.

Or the longest.

Or even the most dramatic.

The ones that stay with me are the moments of connection.

A dad whispering, “You did it.”

A mom laughing through tears because she can’t believe her baby is finally here.

An older sibling walking into the room with wide eyes.

A grandmother quietly standing in the corner, overwhelmed with emotion.

Those moments last only seconds.

Sometimes they’re so subtle that no one else even notices them.

But they become part of your family’s story.

And years later, they’re often the photographs that bring you right back to that day.

My Perspective as a Birth Photographer

People sometimes ask me if photographing birth ever becomes “just another day.”

The answer is no.

Not even close.

Every birth reminds me that no two families are the same.

Every labor unfolds differently.

Every baby enters the world in their own way.

But one thing never changes.

The love in the room.

Whether it’s a first baby or a fifth.

A hospital birth, a home birth, or a birth center birth.

A planned cesarean or an unmedicated water birth.

I’ve never walked away thinking,

“That was just another birth.”

Because to the family welcoming that baby…

It’s the day their world changed forever.

Getting to preserve that for them is something I’ll never take for granted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do parents ever regret hiring a birth photographer?

I’ve certainly heard parents say they wish they had hired one for an older child.

I’ve never had someone tell me they regretted having their baby’s story documented.

More often than not, families tell me they didn’t realize just how meaningful the photographs would become until they looked through their gallery.

What if my labor doesn’t go the way I planned?

Birth rarely follows a perfect script.

Whether your plans change, labor takes longer than expected, or your birth unfolds differently than you imagined, your story is still worth remembering.

Some of the most powerful galleries I’ve delivered came from births that looked very different from the original birth plan.

What if I’m worried about how I’ll look?

Almost every mom mentions this before birth.

Then labor begins.

Your focus shifts completely.

You’re not thinking about your hair, your makeup, or whether you’re smiling.

You’re focused on bringing your baby into the world.

When families receive their galleries, they rarely talk about how they looked.

They talk about how they felt.

And years from now, I believe that’s what will matter most.
