When to Call Your Birth Photographer — A Realistic Timeline for DFW Moms

One of the most common questions I get from moms is this:

“When should I call you?”

And the honest answer?

It depends.

But also… it doesn’t.

Because while every birth is different, there is a rhythm to it.
And knowing when to reach out can make the difference between having your story fully documented… or missing pieces of it.

You don’t need to wait until things feel “serious”

A lot of moms think they should wait until labor feels intense.

Like… can’t talk through contractions, everything is building, it’s clearly “go time.”

But here’s the thing.

Birth doesn’t always give you a warning before it shifts.

Especially with second or third babies.

Things can go from calm… to baby in arms faster than you expect.

Hospital birth in Fort Worth at Texas Health Harris Methodist featuring a fast, unmedicated labor with Midwife and Co. This Dallas Fort Worth birth story documents a powerful third birth, unfolding quickly with natural, physiological labor and supportive midwife care. From active labor through delivery and the first moments after birth, this gallery captures raw, real connection, immediate skin to skin, and the quiet intensity of welcoming a new baby.

The sweet spot is earlier than you think

I always tell my clients:

Call me when you think you might be in labor.

Not when you’re sure.

Not when you’re timing perfectly.

Not when you’re already 7–8 cm.

Because I’d rather get there and things slow down…

than miss the moments that matter most.

The quiet ones.
The anticipation.
The way the room feels before everything changes.

Active labor isn’t the beginning of your story

Active labor is powerful.

But it’s not the whole story.

Your birth begins long before that.

The early contractions.
The pacing.
The nerves.
The way your partner watches you, unsure but steady.

Those are the pieces that make your story feel complete.

What happens if you call too early?

Honestly?

Nothing bad.

I either start heading your way… or I stay close and ready.

You’ll never be a bother.
You’ll never be “too early.”

That’s literally what being on call is for.

What does matter… is calling too late.

Because once things move fast, there’s no pausing it.
