When Should You Book a Birth Photographer?

One of the most common questions I hear is:

“When should I book a birth photographer?”

The short answer is — earlier than you think.

Most families book sometime during the second trimester, once they’ve had time to settle into pregnancy and begin planning for birth.

Because birth photography isn’t scheduled like a typical session…

it revolves around your due date window.

Birth Photography Is Limited by Due Dates — Not Calendar Days

Unlike family or maternity sessions, I can only take on a limited number of births each month.

This is because I am on-call for every client within their due window.

That means:

• I am available day or night
• I keep my schedule flexible
• I limit how many overlapping due dates I accept

So I can show up fully present for each family.

Once those spots are filled…

they’re filled.

What Happens If You Wait Too Long?

Sometimes families reach out late in pregnancy…

and unfortunately, I’m already booked for their due window.

This is one of the hardest messages to send — because I know how important these memories will become.

While I always try to help when I can…

availability is truly limited in birth photography.

And once your window passes, it can’t be recreated.

Booking Early Means Peace of Mind

When you book early, something shifts.

You don’t have to worry about:

availability
timing
last-minute decisions

You get to move through pregnancy knowing:

your story is already held
your space is secured
someone will be there when it matters most

And that peace of mind is worth so much.
